The quality of the landscape is a good indicator of the health of a society.
Professional experience
Joran received his Msc-diploma in Landscape Architecture in 2019 at the Wageningen University. For his final thesis he developed a spatial strategy for placing and designing XXL-warehousing in the landscape of the Netherlands.
In 2020, Joran started as a landscape designer and design researcher at Strootman Landschapsarchitecten. Among his projects are the design research ‘Ontspannen Nederland,' were a spatial strategy for solving the nitrogen problem was developed, and on 'Agroforestry 1+1=3,' which provides a landscape perspective on the development of agroforestry in the Dutch landscape.
Joran started as a PhD researcher and teacher at CML in August 2023. Here, he continued a collaborative project of CML and Strootman Landschapsarchitecten called ‘Nederland Veganland?’, a research by design thought experiment. What if all of the Netherlands switched to a 100% plant-based diet? What would that mean for the layout of the country? For climate justice? For the economy?
Next to his research activities, Joran coordinates and explores a new initiative from Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities. It focuses on connecting the themes of climate change and biodiversity loss into applied and interdisciplinary research and education. The white paper 'Connect Climate and Biodiversity' is the first product of this initiative.
Research topic
Joran conducts design research into (food) landscapes of the future. With his background in landscape architecture, he is able to visualize landscapes, from national to local scale levels. He uses this skill for the development of future scenarios where a balance is sought between the consumption needs of people on the one hand (food, energy, etc.) and the needs for our living environment on the other hand (clean air, nature quality, soil quality, water safety, etc.). "His work is driven by the beauty of the dynamic river delta of the Netherlands and the urgency to use landscape quality as the foundation for further development."
