Jie Shuai joined the Environmental Biology department of CML as a Research Staff Member in November 2025.
Professional experience
Jie Shuai holds an MSc in Industrial Ecology from Leiden University and TU Delft (2025). Her research expertise lies in statistical modelling and data analysis within the agricultural sector. For her master's thesis, she evaluated the potential of using routinely measured management variables to model farm-specific ammonia emissions on dairy farms. Her study identified strong correlations between farm management categories and emission levels, proposing a feasible framework for monitoring and reducing nitrogen footprints. This work, conducted in collaboration with Dirksen Management Support B.V. and Louis Bolk Instituut, underscores her interest in methodological innovation to identify effective, measurable mitigation strategies for the agricultural sector.
Research topic
Jie participates in the newly launched project REMAS (Regionaal Mineralen Aangifte Systeem), where she will contribute to researching regional substance balances of nitrogen. Her role focuses on exploring the feasibility of a regional emission model, which could eventually provide a scientific basis for more flexible, region-specific environmental policies.
