Jan Eijking is Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Institute of Political Science. He works on expertise, empire, and capitalism in the history and theory of international organisations. Jan is the author of The Technocratic International (OUP, 2026) and the editor of Experts in a Turbulent World (OUP, 2026).

Prior to joining Leiden University, he was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Antwerp (2025-26) and William Golding Junior Research Fellow at Brasenose College, University of Oxford (2023-25) associated with the Oxford Martin Programme on Changing Global Orders. He currently is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Studies Association’s Historical International Relations Section (2025-27).

Jan previously completed a DPhil in International Relations at Balliol College, University of Oxford (2023), which was awarded the 2025 Merze Tate Award by the American Political Science Association (APSA) and the 2024 Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis in International Relations in Oxford. His research has also been awarded the Barbara W. Tuchman Prize (ISA 2023), the Prize for Best Graduate Paper in IR Theory (ISA 2023), the Fred Hartmann Award (ISA-Northeast 2022), and the EISA Best Graduate Paper Award (2021).

His research has been published in International Studies Quarterly, the European Journal of International Relations, and the Review of International Studies. He also regularly writes for public outlets such as Time Magazine, The New Statesman, Jacobin, The TLS, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
