COUNTERMOVEMENTS IN THE SECULARISATION OF DUTCH LITERATURE BETWEEN 1980 AND 2000
The developments in Dutch literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries correspond with those of Western literature as a whole, in so far as there is growing secularisation and even resistance to the conventional Christian church and doctrine. During the 1920s, a process delineated by the religious denominations occurred in which the division of the so-called ‘pagan’ authors on the one hand and the Roman Catholic and Protestant authors on the other corresponded in several different ways with the breach between modernism and anti-modernism. This process was  intensified to a greater extent in the first decades after the Second World War; authors who stood up for their Christian identities and treated them thematically, became increasingly marginalised.
After 1980, this appeared to change. Gerard Reve had isolated himself from his contemporaries in the mid-sixties by opting for Roman Catholicism - albeit a rather idiosyncratic variety - and his example was followed some twenty years later by such writers as Frans Kellendonk, Willem Jan Otten, Désanne van Brederode and Vonne van der Meer who began to (re-)orientate themselves towards Christian fundamental principles in an artistic and ideological manner, while at the same time Andreas Burnier, Oek de Jong and others drew inspiration from Buddhism. Marcel Möring and other authors of Jewish descent sought their inspiration – once again- in the Torah and Talmud, while it could be observed  that many other writers exhibited a remarkable interest in different forms of mysticism and spirituality, whether or not of Christian origin.
This countermovement in the secularisation of Dutch Literature is questioned in relation to the process of modernisation as it occurred in Western culture at the beginning of the nineteenth century. To what extent can one speak of a restraining or opposing development? And to what extent does such an opposing development constitute an element of the dynamics which are intrinsic to the process of modernisation? Is it possible to correlate the specific way of treating ideology which the above-mentioned authors intended with the way in which the literary modernists between 1900 and 1940 dealt with philosophical questions and religion?
What do notions such as ‘God’, ‘Christian’, ‘Catholic’, ‘mysticism’ and ‘spirituality’ really stand for?
The starting point of the research is the volume of essays on God (1982) in which for the first time the Van Kellendonk and De Jong generation spoke out collectively on their attitude towards belief. Subsequently, individual publications and contributions to the public debate on God and belief will be analysed based on the questions as formulated above. The report will be presented as a series of articles.
