Isabel Basson is a visiting researcher from the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Scientometrics and STI Policy (SciSTIP), hosted by the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Her current research focuses on investigating inequality in forestry research, as well as exploring how narratives of the societal impact of science are constructed across different countries and contexts.

Isabel Basson is a postdoctoral researcher at the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Scientometrics and STI Policy (SciSTIP), hosted by the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies with her dissertation focusing on investigating the potential citation advantage of open access academic journal articles.

Currently she is involved with two international research projects. The first is titled “Science as a field of struggle: a multi-method empirical study of inequality and its epistemic effects in forest research” (In-Forest). It involves a collaboration between the Technical University of Munich (TUM), CREST, CWTS, and the Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The second is titled “Wider societal value of research and consequences of its assessment: a multi-country and multi-method study” (MultiSocVal). It involves collaboration between the Robert K. Merton Centre for Science Studies (RMZ) at Humboldt University of Berlin, the University of Melbourne, SWPS University, and CREST. It is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.

Previously she has worked on developing bibliometric indicators and on science policy studies. Her main research interests are bibliometrics and scientometrics.
