Iris Müller has been working as a PhD candidate at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology since March 2025.
Iris Müller has been working as a PhD candidate in the Department of Criminology at the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology since March 2025. She completed a Bachelor's degree in Sociology (with distinction) at the University of Groningen. During her studies, she worked as a research assistant on the Closed Coffeeshop Chain Experiment. She then obtained a Master's degree in Sociology of Crime and Safety (with distinction) at the same university. Her thesis focused on the family relationships of incarcerated fathers at the Veenhuizen Penitentiary Institution.
As a PhD candidate, Iris Müller is involved in the Life in Custody study, which is conducted by the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology on behalf of the Custodial Institutions Agency. This survey research aims to explore the relationship between the work climate of staff and the living environment of incarcerated individuals, as well as the consequences of these climates for the inmates during and after detention in all Dutch prisons. Within the Life in Custody study, Iris is researching the social networks of prisoners.
