Professional experience

In 2022, Gen completed his BSc in Fisheries at the University of the Philippines. Shortly after, he worked as a UX Researcher, focusing on how to design user-centered services. In 2023, he moved to the Netherlands to pursue a Research Master in Spatial Sciences (Islands and Sustainability) at the University of Groningen. During this time, Gen worked with organizations such as Canon, the Global Center on Adaptation, PlanetReimagined, and Deltares.

Research topic

Gen is studying nature-based solutions (NbS) implemented in urban riverscapes. In this PhD, he is building a typology of different urban river NbS and assessing what social and ecological outcomes these interventions can provide.  His overall research aims to understand how we can scale up, scale out, and scale deep NbS for urban river biodiversity and human well-being.  This work involves field monitoring with citizen scientists as well as conducting case studies with citizen-led NbS in The Netherlands.
