More information about Frans van Lunteren

The research of Frans van Lunteren focuses on the Dutch natural sciences between 1815 and 1940, particularly in physics. It involves not only developing the content, but also the interaction between science and society in both practical and cultural sense. An example are the discussions  around 1900 studied by Van Lunteren about determinism and causality within different branches of science and culture.

Furthermore, Van Lunteren is interested in the role of institutions such as universities, research institutes (eg KNMI), KNAW and the Dutch government, as well as the progressive internationalization of science. In recent years Van Lunteren's research focuses on the substantive aspects of science, in particular instruments, as well.
