Faiz Rahman is a PhD Candidate at the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance, and Society (VVI) and the Center for Law and Digital Technologies (eLaw). His dissertation revolves around the conceptualisation of ‘public interest’ provisions in the Indonesian Personal Data Protection Law and its delegated legislation. He explores the lawmaking dynamics and the political-institutional processes that shape the formulation of the ‘public interest’ as a legal concept, examines its influence on (re)shaping data governance and the state power, and its impacts on the state-citizen relationship in the digital era, and reflects on the legal, political, and institutional risks that could undermine the role of law in safeguarding human rights and democracy.
Faiz is a Lecturer at the Department of Constitutional Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. He is also a Researcher at the Center for Law and Technology (CTRL) and Adjunct Researcher at the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) at Universitas Gadjah Mada. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (SH) from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Media and Technology Law from the University of New South Wales, Australia. His research interests include law and digital society, privacy and data protection, and constitutional law.
