Frank Willem Jansen is a senior consultant in Gynaecology and currently serving as head a.i. of the department of Gynaecology at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). Since 2009 he is appointed as professor, both at the Leiden University and at the Delft University of Technology (TUD). In this field his assignment is the clinical evaluation of Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques and Technology. He is one of the initiators of the study Clinical Technology/Technical Medicine. In this position he initiates research and education to bring both, the field of technology and medicine closer- and safer together.

Gynaecology

His assignment is the clinical evaluation of Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques and Technology. Research is initiated towards a patient safe implementation of new techniques and technologies in the medical (surgical) working process. Innovations and new technical ideas are not only developed, but also judged on their merits and are scientifically evaluated.

Academic career

His medical degree was obtained at the University of Groningen and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Leiden University. His thesis in 1997 was on Laparoscopic surgery in Gynaecology. A visiting fellowship was done at Stanford University in the USA. Besides, he is trained as (registered) Mediator and strategic coach. In 2009 he was appointed as professor, both at the Leiden University and the Delft University of Technology. The oration was entitled Minimally Invasive surgery: technology in a doctor’s coat. In 2014 he was officially appointed as Medical Delta professor.
