Research
In 2026, together with Zhaole Yang, I was awarded a Comenius Senior Fellow for the project 'From Textbook to Real Talk: Authenticity in Language Acquisition'. This project addresses two challenges in early-stage language education of Chinese and Japanese, two Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) in Europe: (1) the authenticity gap between textbooks and real-world communications, and (2) the lack of concrete, evidence-based pedagogical strategies and learner tools for working with authentic materials. By comparing textbooks with authentic-language corpora, we will develop authentic learning materials that complement existing textbooks in Chinese and Japanese language programs, and formulate teaching and learning strategies that guide instructors and students of LCTLs in using authentic materials.
