Iyute Deborah Oyuu is a PhD candidate and as a Deaf person, she uses Sign language to communicate. Iyute Deborah is attached to Through the Hands of Signers Project which is under the coordination of Dr. Victoria Nyst from the Department of Linguistics. Iyute Deborah is a Sign Language & Disability Inclusion specialist with interests in Sign language and advocacy for an inclusive society and more than 20 years of experience in sign language application, programming, human rights advocacy, policy analysis, gender and disability inclusion.

Research

My research is an empirical study that will explore the implication of Legal recognition of Ugandan Sign language on the communication and instruction of deaf children in primary school in Uganda. This study will seek to answer the question on: How has the legal recognition of Ugandan Sign Language influenced its use in communication and instruction within the primary education system for deaf learners in Uganda? What are the key successes, challenges, and strategies for strengthening sign language rights and implementation in primary education for the deaf in Uganda?

The research will use a mix methodology with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. while document review, survey and semi structured questionnaires, focus group discussions and classroom participant observation will be the main data collection methodologies. in terms of data analysis, the study will deploy a SPSS and excel for annotation of data findings

I possess a Master’s Degree in Business Administration – Management, Unicaf University, Cyprus. I also have a Bachelor Degree in Social Work Community Development, Kyambogo University, Uganda  and a Diploma in Social Work and Social Administration, Makerere Institute of Social Development, Uganda. I also hold academic Certificates in Sign Language Instructions and Adult and Community Education, Kyambogo University, Uganda.

I have held leadership positions with both global, regional and national bodies and in particular, World Federation of the Deaf; Light for the World International, DeafNET Centre of Knowledge; African Women Educationalists Uganda Chapter and the National Union of Women with Disabilities of Uganda.
