Charles Berger is professor of criminalistics at the Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology since November 2011. The chair is made possible by the Stichting Leerstoel Criminalistiek.
Besides that, he is also principal scientist at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI). He specializes in criminalistics and specifically in subjects such as forensic interpretation en inference (logic, probability). At the NFI he is active in a number of areas such as education, R&D strategy, and his own research about which he publishes internationally. He also supports the NFI experts, advises the direction, and guards the scientific quality.
Before he developed into a generalist he was educated at the NFI to be a forensic document examiner. Charles has a background in exact science: he got his PhD in physics (Twente University). After obtaining his PhD he spent 6 years gaining experience abroad with projects at the Naval Research Labs (Washington DC), the universities of California and Bordeaux, and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.
At the moment he is also involved in promoting logically correct reasoning and concluding, making forensic casework more objective, and interpretation at activity level. For such improvements it is essential to explain it as often and as well as possible to all the stakeholders in the justice system. It's an exciting challenge at the interfaces of the worlds of science, police, and law.
