Research

My PhD dissertation, soon a published monograph, investigated the Byzantine province of Paphlagonia, charting the interplay of society, geography, governance, crisis management, and identity formation, converging in a history of the province ca. 640-1140. I have also published research on the Byzantine peasantry and their perception in Byzantine literature (stemming from my MA research), on Byzantium's misrepresentation in modern media, and on various other Byzantine miscellanea. I am currently investigating monetary movement and fiscal policies in Byzantine provincial society in context of the Imperial Monetary Flows project, which involves a comparative framework also including the Roman Empire and the USSR.
