My PhD study investigates tree–microbe interactions and the role of soil microbial communities in supporting tree health under multiple stressors. Main research focus is to identify beneficial soil microbes helping trees withstand multiple abiotic and biotic stressors with the aim of contributing to sustainable ecosystem functioning through microbial re-inoculation.
I hold a BSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Acıbadem University and an MSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Istanbul Technical University (ITU). With a background in molecular biology, I developed a strong interest in microbial communities and their interactions with living organisms.
For my PhD at Leiden University, I shifted my focus towards plant biology, where I study tree–microbe interactions in apple and cherry trees. My research focuses on identifying beneficial soil microbes that can help trees cope with multiple abiotic and biotic stressors and exploring whether reintroducing these microbes can enhance tree resilience. The broader goal is to contribute to healthier, more resilient plant systems and ecosystems. I may have switched from microbes to plants, but luckily, my favourite research companions came along for the ride!
