Professional Experience

Arthur received his BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2020 at Delft University of Technology. In 2024, he finished the MSc program Industrial Ecology, at Leiden University and Delft University of Technology. For his thesis, he analyzed the potential gains of adopting a plant-based diet in reducing land use prone to biodiversity loss. After this, he contributed as a research assistant at CML to a study that connects dietary patterns with environmental impacts, thus further exploring his interests on the intersection of food and sustainability.

Research topic

The transition toward more plant‑based diets is essential for environmental, health, and ethical reasons. A central challenge in enabling this shift is identifying sustainable protein sources that can be produced locally. The REAP2SOW project addresses this challenge by examining the potential of three promising novel food crops for the Netherlands: lupin beans, quinoa, and aardaker (Lathyrus tuberosus). Within this project, Arthur’s research focuses on assessing the environmental performance of these crops within Dutch agricultural systems to better understand their potential for sustainable local protein production. In addition to this, he will evaluate their toxicity and nutritional value in collaboration with Wageningen Food Safety Research.
