Before joining the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University, Arman completed his master's in sociology at South Asian University in India. His master's thesis examined the performance of religious authority by the Shi'a 'Ulama (religious scholars) in Hyderabad, India. Arman was particularly interested in asking what it means to perform sermons of ritualistic mourning and what it means to grieve listening to the sermons of mourning. Arman earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Ramjas College, Delhi University.
During his bachelor's, Arman finished a thesis on the role of Islamic religious authorities and sectarianism in India. Currently, Arman is working on his PhD dissertation, studying transnational charitable giving and asking what it means to give and receive Islamic charity in contemporary India.
Additionally, Arman has experience working with policy institutes studying marginality and urban space, specifically exploring what it means to live and aspire in spaces of social segregation in India.
