Anouk den Besten has been affiliated to the Institute of Criminal Law & Criminology since 2019 as a lecturer and researcher in Criminology. In 2017, she completed her Master's degree in Psychology, specializing in Conflict, Risk and Safety at the University of Twente (cum laude). Following her graduation, she worked for several years as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Twente. During this period, she also served as a volunteer in legal support at Victim Support Netherlands (Slachtofferhulp Nederland).

Teaching
As Programme director for the Bachelor’s and Master's programmes in Criminology, Anouk is responsible for the management, quality assurance, and ongoing development of the Criminology curriculum. In recent years, she has been closely involved in the comprehensive revision of the Bachelor's programme curriculum.
As a course coordinator and/or lecturer, she is involved in several courses, including Skill lab 1, Sociologische criminologie, Daders en Rechtshandhaving & Politie. In addition, she supervises theses and coordinates the Bachelor's thesis trajectory.

Research
As a researcher, Anouk has contributed to several research projects commissioned by the Research and Documentation Centre (WODC) and the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security. Most recently, she participated in the research project Van Bajes naar Buiten, in which she conducted qualitative longitudinal research into the experiences of formerly incarcerated individuals and professionals involved in the reintegration process.
Her previous research has focused on social safety in women's prisons, incidents of aggression directed at staff working in asylum reception centres, and the application of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies within judicial and correctional settings.
