Alexander Schmatz holds a B.Sc. in Biology, where he completed a thesis in computational neurobiology, using conditional GANs to investigate cuttlefish camouflage behaviour. He earned an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, writing his thesis on applying ‘Deep Genome Encoders to identify promoter sequences associated with plant pest resistance’.
He also completed an M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence, focusing his thesis on leveraging the information bottleneck theorem to develop a robust and explainable multimodal fMRI/sMRI model for diagnosing major depressive disorder. In his current research: He is developing advanced anomaly detection methodologies under the supervision of Hazel Doughty.
