Description of Expertise
Aart W. Kleyn received a bachelors in chemistry and mathematics at Leiden University in 1972, and a masters in physics with mathematics and geochemistry at the University of Amsterdam. He obtained his PhD in Physics at the same University in 1980, cum laude. He worked as Post Doctoral Fellow with IBM Research in 1980-1981. He was a member of the scientific staff of the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam from 1981 until 1999. He became Professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam in 1988. He was head of the Atomic and Molecular Physics Divisions of the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics. In 1999 he left Amsterdam and joined the faculty of Leiden University as professor of chemistry. In 2003 he became director of the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen. Prof. Kleyn served on many boards and committees nationally and internationally. He was President of the Netherlands Physical Society (1998-2001). He was President of the Physics Education Division of the European Physical Society. He is Editor of the Journal Progress in Surface Science, and serves on the board of several International Journals. He has organized and co-organized many international conferences. He chaired two international research networks sponsored by the European Union. He was elected into the Selection and Scheduling Board of the Gordon Research Conferences (USA). He is a fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK). He is a member of the American Vacuum Society, the American Physical Society, the European Physical Society, the Netherlands Physical Society (NNV), the Netherlands Vacuum Society (NEVAC), the Royal Dutch Society of Science (Haarlem), the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK).
