Joost Baarssen (1987) obtained his Ph.D. summa cum laude from TU Dortmund University in 2017 with a dissertation, entitled “American Dreams, European Nightmares: Anti-Europeanisms in the United States.” In this work I contend that anti-Europeanism, shaped and framed in the late eighteenth century, remains relevant in the United States today. From Thomas Jefferson to Donald Trump, anti-Europeanisms have found a fertile soil in American political culture. The dissertation won the Obama Dissertation Prize in 2017.

Joost studied American Studies with minors in Peace and Conflict Studies and Political Science at the University of Groningen and Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He obtained his M.A. degree cum laude from Radboud University Nijmegen in 2010 with a thesis, entitled “Just Like US: The Dutch Image in Mid to Late Nineteenth-Century America” (published as America's True Mother Country? Images of the Dutch in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century).

In the past, Joost taught courses in American cultural history, literary and cultural studies, as well as transatlantic history and imagology, and co-taught a class on the cultural production of crises and threats in American culture. In the International Studies program, he teaches “Introduction to International Studies,” “Politics,” “History: North America” (1st year), “Politics: North America” (2nd year), as well as PRINS (3rd year).
