Our research and teaching
Societies around the world are undergoing profound transformations. These are driven by global warming, political and geopolitical shifts, an increasingly educated populace, rapid technological developments and demographic developments such as population ageing. These social transitions – such as the energy transition, increasing social diversity, digitalisation and political fragmentation – are reshaping the political, economic and social fabric of our communities. They can deepen divisions, exacerbate inequality and challenge the foundations of democracy.
Leiden University helps individuals, groups and leaders understand and navigate these changes. Drawing on insights from law, the humanities, and social and behavioural sciences, our groundbreaking research and teaching focus on how these interconnected transitions are transforming politics and society. We study the societal pressures that strain intergroup relations, while also identifying ways to strengthen social cohesion and give those involved a greater sense of agency. Our expertise includes fostering behavioural change, building social resilience, enhancing mutual trust and strengthening democratic institutions.
We share these insights with citizens, policymakers and political leaders, equipping them to implement effective, widely supported measures that help our society in times of change.
