MultiObs is a São Paulo Chair of Excellence (SPEC) project funded by FAPESP and hosted at the Institute of Geosciences (IG) and the Department of Science and Technology Policy (DPCT) of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). It aims to develop a broad research program to create evidence and knowledge for more effective monitoring of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

The program addresses critical and contemporary issues in STI indicators and policymaking, including widespread challenges regarding data infrastructures, funding dynamics, and societal and policy engagement with STI. Doing so, it aims to create a new framework for STI monitoring that federates data infrastructures and adopts participatory and multi-perspective approaches.

MultiObs is structured around three main components:

1. A federated big data research infrastructure;
2. Four thematic branches addressing pressing challenges in STI, including (a) STI funding and workforce, (b) public communication, (c) technology and innovation, and (d) science-policy and diplomacy in STI.
3. An innovative living lab to co-create STI indicators together with a broad range of stakeholders.

MultiObs brings together a large international team of researchers and partners across five continents, with representation from Brazil, Europe, North America, Latin America and Africa. Among its expected outcomes, the project aims to contribute to the democratization of open research information for scientometrics and science policy.
