Forgeries and misleading information, ranging from fake news and forged documents to invented national histories, are attracting growing attention worldwide. At the same time, research on these phenomena is still largely conducted within separate academic disciplines, leaving important connections between cases, periods and regions unexplored. This project brings together researchers from a wide range of fields in an international network for forgery studies. The initiative will develop an English-language online platform featuring searchable databases of researchers and publications, organise two interdisciplinary symposia, and lay the groundwork for a new open-access academic journal. By promoting knowledge exchange, methodological reflection and international collaboration, the project aims to strengthen and sustain an emerging field of research. In doing so, it will contribute to a deeper understanding of the role, functioning and societal impact of forgeries, disinformation and fake news in both historical and contemporary global contexts.
Goal of the project
The project aims to build an international network for researchers working on forgeries, fake news and related topics. By connecting scholars from different disciplines and world regions, it seeks to promote knowledge exchange, stimulate new interdisciplinary collaborations and establish a sustainable international research field.
Interdisciplinary approach
The project brings together expertise from fields including history, art history, philology, media studies, area studies and political science. By connecting researchers with different disciplinary, historical and geographical perspectives, it creates opportunities for new comparisons, shared methodologies and joint research agendas focused on textual, visual and material forgeries.
