Egyptian Arabic Evening Classes
If you are working or studying in Egypt, but find it hard to communicate in spoken Egyptian Arabic, then this course is perfect for you. In ten weeks’ time, you will be equipped with the communicative skills in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic needed to engage in basic social interactions. Scheduled in the evenings, this course can be combined with your professional activities.
Course description
This 40 hours interactive course in survival Arabic focuses on everyday language use. It is based on a communicative approach in which communication between instructor-students and students-students is the main tool of teaching. Authentic tasks related to the language of everyday life are used in class activities as well as for homework. The course targets students and professionals living in Egypt who in their daily life have to communicate in Arabic. The course also makes use of peer-work and games in the classroom in order to enhance communicative skills. Course materials will be in transliteration (Arabic written in Latin letters) as well as in the Arabic script, which participants will be able to use by the end of the course.
Course outcome
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Identify the most common greetings and phrases used in everyday life.
• Introduce themselves and other people.
• Describe their family.
• Conduct short conversations related to everyday life, including but not limited to taking a taxi, buying things and renting a flat.
• Read street signs and short ads.
Course material
For this course NVIC has developed its own course book: Yalla Masr. A beginners’ course in Egyptian Arabic (included in the course fees), which contains grammar, vocabulary and exercises.
Based on authentic materials, it combines te strengths of other available handbooks, while avoiding some of their shortcomings. In addition, handouts and audio recordings for listening exercises will be provided by the course instructors as well as additional materials.
The instructors
NVIC’s language instructors, all native speakers, are formally trained to teach Arabic to non-native speakers, and have long-standing experience in teaching Arabic (including Egyptian Colloquial Arabic) to undergraduate and graduate university students as well as diplomats and professionals residing in Egypt. Our teachers pride themselves in being up-to-date on the latest theoretical insights in language teaching, ensuring the efficiency of our teaching methods.
Target group
This course targets professionals and students who reside in Egypt and intend to enhance their communicative skills in everyday social interactions. Prior knowledge of Arabic, or the Arabic alphabet, is not required.

Practical information and term dates
The Survival Arabic Group Lessons are taught three times a year, from January-March, from April-June and from September-December.
The upcoming term will start on 30 September and end on 9 December. Registration deadline is Wednesday, 25 September at 2pm.
Classes take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 pm to 8 pm, in the institute.
The course fee is EUR 300, including all course materials.
A minimum of five students is required and a maximum of fifteen students are accepted.
If the minimum number of 5 students has not been reached, fees will be refunded to the students
