Vasiliki Kosta appointed member of the Committee of the KNAW

Vasiliki Kosta has been appointed as a member of the Committee of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) tasked with writing an advisory report on legal safeguards for academic freedom.

The Minister of Education, Culture and Science has asked the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) to advise on

  • Whether academic freedom enjoys adequate protection under current Dutch law and international treaties that are binding on the Netherlands
  • Which legal or other protections can be put in place to better safeguard academic freedom in the Netherlands
  • What the Netherlands can learn from other countries in this respect
  • How any firmer legal grounding of academic freedom would impact research universities, universities of applied sciences, teaching hospitals, and the institutes of the Academy and the Dutch Research Council (NWO) as employers
  • What the consequences would be for the role of government and politics

Vasiliki Kosta is part of the Committee drifting the advisory report. The Committee is chaired by Prof. André Nollkaemper, distinguished university professor of International Law and Sustainability, University of Amsterdam.

The Committee includes the following further members:

  • Peter Hagoort, emeritus director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, emeritus founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, emeritus founding director of the Donders Institute, Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, emeritus professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, Radboud University
  • Henk Kummeling, distinguished university professor of Comparative Constitutional Law, Utrecht University
  • Ingrid Leijten, professor of Dutch and European Constitutional Law, Tilburg University
  • Eric van de Luijtgaarden, professor and endowed professor of Preventive Law, Zuyd University and Maastricht University

The advisory report will be published in summer 2026.
