Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court
The annual Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court competition took place in Bratislava, Slovakia, from 19 to 21 June 2025. Twelve student teams from various European countries took part in the labour law moot court competition.
The teams were presented with a challenging case dealing with cross-border remote working and the question of which national law applies in such situations. They also had to plead on the role of the European Works Council in this context and liability for workplace accidents. The teams were assessed on both their written preparation and their oral advocacy skills.
The members of the Dutch team were labour law students Lola Lambert, Nils van der Horn and Anne Roos. The fourth member of the team was Kevin Simmons from Groningen. The team was coached by Marije Schneider and Heleen Andriessen who both work at the Department of Labour Law and Social Security. Former colleagues Hanneke Bennaers and Beryl ter Haar also assisted the team. A period of intensive preparations went into the oral arguments presented in Bratislava.
Although this was, of course, a competition in which teams had to compete against each other’s legal knowledge, there was a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, the Dutch team did not make it through the preliminary round, but the jury said it had been very hard to choose between the Netherlands and Italy, one of the later finalists. The moot court competition was eventually won by the team from Georgia. The Dutch students can look back on an enjoyable as well as educational experience. The coaches and the Department of Labour Law are extremely proud of the team’s great performance during the preparations and their achievements in Bratislava.
