The European Union (EU) and the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) launch EU-CARIFORUM Food Security Programme
On 23 November 2023, the Caribbean Forum, a subgroup of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, joined forces with the EU to launch the Food Security Programme in Guyana. The implementation of this project started in December 2023 and is expected to last for four years.
Through this programme, the EU is providing €19 million to support the regional efforts towards a more sustainable and resilient food system in the Caribbean. This includes the EU collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for the purpose of attracting investment, supporting agri-tech solutions and enhancing distribution channels (I), The International Trade Centre (ITC) to strengthen selected value chains and market linkages (II), The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to enhance sanitary and phytosanitary systems (III), and the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP) to work with Caribbean countries addressing nutrition and promoting healthy diets while supporting inclusive social protection systems (IV).
This programme is also intended to advance the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joint commitment to reduce the Caribbean’s food import bill by 25% by 2025.
