Luman Meeting November 2023

During this LUMAN meeting we discussed the concept of "disappointment".

As our starting point we used the Annual Review article on disappointment by Jessica Greenberg and Sarah Muir (2022), but soon the discussion developed into a focus on our own research and methodological experiences. We addressed questions such as which role disappointment played in our different projects, what a focus on disappointment could reveal and how to deal with expectations and disappointments on a methodological level. From the discussions we learned that disappointment can be used as a lens to understand personal expectations and claims, but also trust and mistrust in institutions and states. We found that disappointment plays an important role on different levels and can even be used as a shaming device, allowing us to discuss its affective force.
