Professor Fergus McNeill appointed as visiting professor at the Institute of Criminal Law & Criminology

Fergus McNeill has been appointed as visiting professor at the Institute of Criminal Law & Criminology of Leiden Law School.

McNeill is Professor of Criminology and Social Work at the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research of Glasgow University. Prior to becoming an academic in 1998, he worked for a decade in residential drug rehabilitation and as a criminal justice social worker.

His many research projects and publications have examined institutions, cultures and practices of punishment, rehabilitation and reintegration, particularly with community contexts. From 2012 to 2016, he chaired the EU-funded COST Action on Offender Supervision in Europe, a major research network that spanned 23 countries and involved over 50 researchers. More recently, from 2017 to 2021, Fergus led ‘Distant Voices: Coming Home’, a multi-partner Economic and Social Research Council/Arts and Humanities Research Council project which explored re-integration after punishment through creative practices and research methods. His book ‘Pervasive Punishment: Making sense of mass supervision’ was the winner of the European Society of Criminology's 2021 Book Prize.

McNeill has been appointed for the academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025. Twice a year  he will come to Leiden for two to three weeks to collaborate with the institute’s staff members.
