Broader perspective on leadership needed: use all the tools in the toolbox

Leadership in a public organisations is no longer just the domain of the management. Modern leadership also requires the use of a diverse repertoire of behavioural skills. To accommodate this, today’s managers rely on a toolbox full of tools, according to Marieke van der Hoek, PhD candidate at the Institute of Public Administration in her dissertation. The PhD ceremony will take place on 9 March 2023.

Van der Hoek concludes in her dissertation that the available literature in the field of leadership only focusses on a limited definition of what leadership means. ‘Motivating subordinates is a recurring theme. But that is not the only thing you need to consider when it comes to leadership. Managers also have to be able to influence people higher up in the organisation, for instance, or other managers on the same level, or external partners.’
