Melanie Fink speaks at Workshop of the Frontex Fundamental Rights Office

From 1-2 December 2022, the Frontex fundamental rights team met for a Workshop to reflect on their role and discuss current issues. Melanie Fink, Assistant Professor of European Law, was invited to contribute to the discussion with insights from her research on Frontex’s obligations and responsibility.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, better known under its acronym Frontex, is a Warsaw-based EU agency tasked with supporting the Member States in the area of border management. In recent years, Frontex has increasingly come under scrutiny for the fundamental rights impact of its activities.

Monitoring and reporting on Frontex’s compliance with its fundamental rights obligations is the task of the Frontex Fundamental Rights Officer, since June 2021 Jonas Grimheden, supported by a team of over 60 individuals trained in monitoring, assessing, and advising on fundamental rights-related matters in the agency’s work.

From 1-2 December 2022, the Frontex fundamental rights team met outside Warsaw for a two-day reflection on their role, current challenges, and potential for the future. Tamás Molnár from the Fundamental Rights Agency and Melanie Fink were invited to contribute to the discussion with insights from their research and work.
