Steven Truxal appointed Professor of Air and Space Law in Leiden
Steven Truxal joins Leiden University as Professor of Air and Space Law on 1 December 2020. Truxal holds a BA in International Affairs with concentrations in international law and economics from The George Washington University, Washington, DC (USA), an LLM in International Commercial Law with focus on international transport and a PhD in Air Law from the University of Westminster, London (UK).
His PhD dissertation was later published as Competition and Regulation in the Airline Industry: Puppets in Chaos (Routledge 2012). Truxal’s second monograph is entitled Economic and Environmental Regulation of International Aviation: From Inter-National to Global Governance (Routledge 2017).
Truxal comes to Leiden from The City Law School, University of London (UK), where he has worked since 2012. Prior to his current position as Reader in Air Law and Associate Dean (International), Truxal developed and managed City, University of London’s first online degree programme, the LLM in International Business Law. Previously, Truxal served as Visiting Professor of Law and Dean of Studies at the Centre for British Studies, Humboldt University in Berlin. Truxal has a track record of research excellence and delivering high-quality education, supported by innovative teaching and assessment methods. In 2016, he received The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. Prior to his academic career, Truxal gained experience through working in the aviation industry and in government administration.

Truxal is well positioned to perform the academic and managerial activities required of the Chair, in order not only to uphold but to further enhance the reputation of the International Institute of Air and Space Law. While cooperating closely with other members of the Leiden Law School, Truxal will cultivate the Institute’s worldwide network.
Truxal has spent time as visiting researcher at the McGill Institute of Air and Space Law in Montreal. Having taught in Leiden in recent years as a guest lecturer, Truxal is highly appreciated by the students of the Adv. LLM in Air and Space Law. The Institute is delighted to welcome Steven Truxal to the team. He will succeed Professor Pablo Mendes de Leon, who will remain in function full-time until 1 February 2021 and part-time until the summer of 2021.
