Grant for Elastix medical imaging software

LUMC researcher Marius Staring will receive a $ 200,000 grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to improve the accessibility, interoperability and efficiency of the Elastix imaging software. This will give the popular 2003 software package a much-needed new impulse.

The grant comes from the CZI Essential Open Source Software for Science programme, a very prestigious programme to support open source scientific computing software. Staring, researcher at the Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Image Processing, Radiology, is the only recipient of this grant in the Netherlands.

Maintenance is needed

Elastix is one of the most popular medical imaging toolboxes worldwide with tens of thousands of users, but dates back to 2003 and therefore requires some maintenance. Staring and his colleagues will make the software available in the Python programming language, improve performance, and increase ease of use for people who are not imaging experts.
