The research article ‘Neanderthal fire-making technology inferred from microwear analysis’ received 7,053 article views in 2018, placing it as one of the top 100 read Scientific Reports articles in that year.

Scientific Reports published more than 17,000 articles in 2018, and, according to the journal, a position in the top 100 most highly read articles is an extraordinary achievement: ‘your science is of real value to the research community.’
The article proved that Neanderthals were able to make fire on a large scale with the aid of pyrite and hand-axes. This means they could decide when and where they wanted fire and were not dependent on natural fire, as was thought earlier. Archaeologist Andrew Sorensen discovered the first material evidence for this.
