Summer in Leiden and The Hague through student eyes
Over the summer, students – and a few members of staff – at Leiden University sent in their best photos to the University’s ‘Summer in Leiden and The Hague’ photo competition. All these summer-inspired photos are now on display in the Summer in the City photo exhibition in the University’s central administration building.
Leiden’s Nieuwe Rijn canal thronging with boats, sun-drenched cafés on the Grote Markt in The Hague or a balmy evening at the beach: Leiden and The Hague at their summer best. Even though there are no lectures, by no means all students have flown the city. Many of them are working on their theses in the University library, carrying out research in the lab or simply enjoying the sun at a pavement café.
Photo competition
The Summer in the City photo exhibition shows summer in Leiden and The Hague through the eyes of students and staff at Leiden University. In July and August, the news editors at the Strategic Communication and Marketing department organised a photo competition focusing on summer in Leiden and The Hague. Over a hundred people sent in one or more photos. Each week the best photos were highlighted as the Photo of the Week on the University’s Facebook page and on our Instragram channel. And at the close of the competition, three winners were chosen, each of whom was presented with an Instax camera.
Social media community
This collection of photos not only shows the two cities at their best, but is also a good example of how Leiden University interacts with the University community via social media. What we saw was that, as more Photos of the Week were published, the number of submissions and the reactions to the photos increased. Summer in the City, with its atmospheric photos given hashtags and polaroid frames, is an ode to the summer and at the same time an ode to Leiden University’s loyal followers on social media.

Summer in the City – Leiden & The Hague through the eyes of students can be viewed free of charge from 6 to 26 October in the main hall of the University’s administration and central services building (de Oude UB, Rapenburg 70, Leiden), on work days from 09.00 to 17.00 hrs.
