Adriaan Bedner appointed as KITLV professor of Law and Society in Indonesia
As from 1 February Adriaan Bedner is the new KITLV professor (bij special appointment) of Law and Society in Indonesia at the Van Vollenhoven Institute (VVI), Leiden University.
Adriaan has been working at the VVI since 1992, when he started his PhD-research about administrative courts in Indonesia. After completing his thesis he has continued his research about Indonesian socio-legal issues, notably in the fields of environment, land and family. Adriaan has been involved in many research projects and over the years he has been the daily supervisor of some 15 PhD-students. He has developed and taught courses on Indonesian law, as well as more general courses at the Law Faculty and at Leiden University College, including ‘Law and Culture’, ‘Law and Governance in Asia’, and ‘Making Human Rights Work: Legal and Non-Legal Strategies’.
Adriaan’s current research focuses on the Indonesian Ombudsman and on legal education. He is also leading a research project within the framework of the legal co-operation between the Indonesian and the Dutch Supreme Court, which aims to reinforce certainty in the Indonesian Supreme Court’s interpretation of the law.
