Vacancies: four PhD positions in History

The Institute for History announces vacancies for three PhD positions on Rethinking Disability: the Global Impact of the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981) in Historical Perspective and one PhD position to conduct research on the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC).

The Institute for History is the home of a vibrant community of researchers and lecturers with outstanding track records and successful in attracting national and international research grants. Under the label ‘Global Questions, Local Sources’ scholars affiliated to the Institute combine a deep knowledge of global interactions and of specific localities, regions and states in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. They use comparative, connective and entangled approaches and resort to qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

All researchers of the Institute for History are connected to one of the five research programmes: The Unification of the Mediterranean World (400 BC - 400 AD), Collective Identities and Transnational Networks in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, 1000-1800, Political Culture and National Identities, Colonial and Global History, and Cities, Migration and Global Interdependence.

3 PhD Positions for the project 'Rethinking Disability: the Global Impact of the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981) in Historical Perspective'

Approximately 10% of the world’s population is estimated to be disabled and this number is expected to rise in the next few decades. People in different cultural settings ascribe different meanings to disability; consequently, its repercussions are both culturally contingent and universal.

This ERC-funded project’s main ambition is to bring the burgeoning field of disability studies to the attention of mainstream historical scholarship. It will use the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP), which was organized under the auspices of the United Nations in 1981, as an unconventional lens through which to study the broader political, social and cultural processes in the last quarter of the twentieth century at international, national and local-grassroots levels.

The three PhD positions are offered on a 0.9 fte basis for four years. Initially all employees will receive a one year contract. An extension of three years is possible having received positive evaluations of capabilities and achievements. Starting date: 1 February 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. Closing date for applications: 11 November 2015.

Startdatum aanstelling: 1 januari 2016. Sluitingsdatum sollicitaties: 2 november 2015.
