On 20 December 2013, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) announced that 37 teachers will be conducting doctoral research funded by a Doctoral Scholarship.
Using this scholarship, teachers are enabled, in addition to their educational activities, to conduct research leading to a dissertation. The selected teachers will be provided with a maximum of 0.4 FTE worth of research time for the duration of 4 years, whilst retaining their salary. The NWO is in charge of supplying the Scholarship.

One of the teachers who was granted the Scholarship is music theory teacher Bert Mooiman of the Royal Conservatoire. His research is entitled 'Improvisation in 19th century music', and addresses the following: ‘The modern way of performing classical music does not fully encompass the fact that in the past centuries, a substantial amount of music was improvised. This research aims to uncover the original role of improvisation in 19th century music, and what bearing it has on performance practice.’
