Who pays the bill? Media attention for calculating environmental damage
In the media
Those who consume the most also cause the greatest environmental damage. For the top ten per cent of consumers worldwide, this amounts to as much as 5.7 trillion dollars. This new research from Leiden has received considerable attention in international media.
Inge Schrijver and her colleagues found that the top ten per cent of global consumers are responsible for a disproportionate share of environmental damage—worth thousands of billions each year—and that more targeted, fairer policies should focus primarily on this group to effectively reduce that impact.
In the Netherlands, BNR Nieuwsradio covered the research, with co-researcher Rutger Hoekstra featured in the broadcast. The study has also been picked up by various international media outlets, from Germany to Brazil and from the United States to the United Kingdom.
Below is a selection of English-language articles and news items highlighting Schrijver’s research.
