Dirk Bouwmeester in NRC: ‘We understand the quantum world fantastically well—now we still need to grasp the transition from the quantum to the classical world.’

Recently, Austrian physicists succeeded in placing minuscule metal spheres with a diameter of 0.000008 millimetres into superposition.

Professor Dirk Bouwmeester of Leiden University explains these new developments in NRC: ‘We understand the quantum world extremely well, yet it remains unclear how our classical reality emerges. Experiments such as those conducted in Austria, and also in Leiden within the Quantum Limits project, aim precisely to make this transition visible in the future.’
