Willemijn Aerdts on supervision of intelligence services

The ‘Toetsingscommissie Inzet Bevoegdheden’ (TIB), an independent Dutch committee overseeing intelligence efforts and competences, is facing criticism on its supervision of the Dutch intelligence services. ‘Whether the increased supervision is hurting (national) security, can really only be determined after the fact, when something has happened, such as an attack,’ says Willemijn Aeardts in Dutch newspaper ‘NRC’. Aerdts is a lecturer at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs.

Intelligence services AIVD and MIVD are complaining about the TIB’s supervision. The consequences of the increased supervision are unclear, according to Aerdts. It is clear, however, that TIB’s methods of communication play an important role, and could potentially backfire.
