Book presentation 'Opportunities in the Kingdom'. 200 years of student financing

On Monday, 1 February a beautifully designed and accessible book appeared about two centuries of student financing and apprenticeship in the Netherlands, entitled Kansen in het Koninkrijk (‘Opportunities in the Kingdom’). The book was presented to Job Cohen, a Leiden University professor and chairman of the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF in the Gothic Hall of the Council of State. As a special feature, this book can be downloaded free of charge from the DUO website.

200 years of student financing in a special book for the general public

The central government has been providing financial support to young people pursuing a degree since 1815. The aims of this support could vary widely: from nation-building to economic development and from protecting an elite to providing equal opportunities. It had a wide range of results, as well: some measures worked well, while others backfired.

The three dissertations

The authors Pieter Slaman (Leiden University Dual PhD Centre), Wouter Marchand (University of Groningen) and Ruben Schalk (Utrecht University) each wrote a dissertation in which they explored the political, social and economic history of this topic, respectively.

The three dissertations formed the basis for Kansen in het Koninkrijk, a beautifully designed book for a general readership in which the results of their research are brought together and presented. On Monday the three dissertations were presented to Job Cohen and representatives of the student organisations LSVB and ISO, together with the new book.

This unique project was a five-year collaborative effort between the three universities in Leiden, Utrecht and Groningen, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations.
