Temporalities: How do the arts use the past and imagine the future?
This research strand centers on the relations between cultural expressions and time.
How do media technologies, such as the printed book, make use of technologies inherited from the past, such as the manuscript? How do new media reuse cultural expressions from the past, for example in film adaptations of novels and plays? How do literary works explore historical ruptures, such as the Protestant Reformation or the Revolutions of 1989? What roles do the arts play in creating and critiquing forms of collective memory, or in imagining possible futures? Key themes within this strand include reception history; the history of media; and our relation to cultural heritage.
