Huizinga Lecture
Since 1972, the Huizinga Lecture has been organised annually in Leiden. On Thursday, December 11, 2025, philosopher and former Dutch Thinker Laureate Daan Roovers will deliver the 54th Huizinga Lecture at the Stadsgehoorzaal in Leiden.
Johan Huizinga

The lecture was named after historian and cultural philosopher Johan Huizinga (1872-1945). The lectures have – in the spirit of Huizinga's work – a cultural-historical or social-critical character by nature.
Huizinga lecture 2025
On Thursday, December 11, 2025, philosopher and former Dutch Thinker Laureate Daan Roovers will deliver the 54th Huizinga Lecture at the Stadsgehoorzaal in Leiden. This lecture is in Dutch. Tickets are available via the website of the Stadsgehoorzaal.
Organisation
The Huizinga Lecture is organised by the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University, the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde and (since 2014) EW magazine.
