Geopolitical tensions, political polarisation and extreme economic uncertainty are hitting home in Europe: energy prices are surging, countries spend much more on defence, and social welfare is under strain. What can – and should – the European Central Bank (ECB), as guardian of the euro, do about it? How can it keep inflation under control while supporting the economy and the big transformations ahead? And how can Europe and the euro cope with global currency competition in the digital era, as crypto and stablecoins rise and international finance becomes increasingly weaponised? In this talk, Gabriel Glöckler, Principal Communications Adviser at the ECB, explores what these profound changes mean for the euro area economy, monetary policy and the future of the euro.
