Generative AI is changing research practices across the academic community. We are all learning what these developments mean for our work. The Graduate School of FGGA is therefore organising a session specifically for PhD candidates, offering a dedicated setting in which to discuss questions, experiences and dilemmas related to the use of AI in doctoral research.
The session is not intended to introduce a new set of faculty rules. We might not be able to provide definitive answers for every situation. Instead, it is an opportunity to explore how PhD candidates are encountering AI in practice. Questions might concern, for example, literature reviews, transcription, qualitative coding, data analysis or drafting text, as well as academic integrity, transparency, confidentiality and data protection.
The session will be led by Cameron Hope, Information Manager at FGGA. He will open the conversation with a short presentation on how a range of academic publishers and journals currently approach the use of AI. Although their policies share principles such as human accountability and the protection of confidential material, they differ in what they permit and in how AI use must be disclosed. The overview is intended as a starting point for discussion; it does not constitute FGGA policy.
Most of the session will be reserved for discussion. You are invited to raise questions and concerns and, if you wish, share examples from your own research practice. The conversation will also help the Graduate School better understand where PhD candidates encounter uncertainty and where further discussion or support might be useful.
