About the conference

As part of the 2025–2026 cohort of Leiden University of the MARS: Non-Western Migration Regimes in a Global Perspective staff exchange program, secondees conducted migration-related research at partner universities in Ghana, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan. This hybrid conference marks the conclusion of the program and provides an opportunity for the secondees to reflect on their research experiences and share initial findings.

The presentations will focus in particular on the practical and methodological challenges encountered during fieldwork preparation and execution, as well as the best practices developed to address them. Topics will include ethical and privacy considerations in fieldwork preparation, navigating institutional sensitivities, the role of network dynamics during fieldwork, and the challenges posed by the limited availability of pre-existing data in specific contexts.

The conference aims to offer practical insights and guidance for researchers planning to conduct migration-related fieldwork in the Global South. The event is intended for students, academics, researchers, and policymakers working on migration-related issues, especially those with an interest in conducting fieldwork.
