Title: Coinciding random walks on networks
Abstract: Random walks are widely used to model diffusion on networks. This work introduces a generalization of this classic conservative dynamical process to M simultaneous random walkers on the same underlying (directed) network, with M allowed to be much larger than the number of nodes, N. Directed edges activate as renewal processes in continuous time, becoming available for an instant, and RWs traverse an available link with probability p ∈ (0, 1]. Where M > 1, there may be multiple occupancy at the source node of an available link and the steps of our M RWs can come to “coincide”. This model fills in the space between several prior models of conservative dynamics that are not usually considered together, and gives rise to dynamics beyond diffusion. Analytical findings and computational simulation indicate the existence of a previously puzzling dynamical regime that we call “partial coalescence”. The presentation will also touch on an application of this model to simulating financial transactions within closed payment systems,
Snacks and drinks will be available after the seminar at the Fusiebar.
