Abstract
Indirect translation, often referred to as pivot translation, involves translating from another translation or with a further translation in mind. This approach is increasingly widespread in media localization, particularly in the distribution of non-English language content, and elicits contrasting viewpoints from translation stakeholders. Navigating the constant flux of these differing opinions can be overwhelming for language professionals.
In this talk, Dr. Hanna Pieta will organize some of these viewpoints by examining indirect (pivot) audiovisual translation through the lenses of automation, ethics, and sustainability. The aim is to equip participants with practical strategies to evaluate these contrasting perspectives, so that they can feel more confident in making informed decisions regarding the use of indirect (pivot) translation in their audiovisual translation practice or advising their clients on the associated opportunities and risks.
About the speaker
Dr. Hanna Pieta is assistant professor at NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (Lisbon, Portugal), a researcher at CETAPS and Associate Editor of the Scopus-indexed Translation Matters journal.
She has recently co-authored a book titled Indirect Translation Explained (Routledge, 2022) and guest-edited two special issues of Perspectives (forthcoming) and Translation Spaces (2023) on, respectively, indirect audiovisual translation and sustainable development goals.
She is also the co-founder and co-coordinator of IndirecTrans, an international network of researchers working on indirect translation, which aims to deliver a greater depth of partnership and academic collaboration across Europe.
